Why Was PSU Indictment Not Released Until After Paterno Won Record-Setting 409th Game?

Did Grand Jury Intentionally Cut Joe Paterno a Break?

On Saturday, October 29, 2011, Joe Paterno won his 409th game, an all-time record

Paterno After Win 409 - Was it Worth it, Joe?

On Friday, November 4, 2011, the PSU Indictment was released, and Jerry Sandusky was arrested.

PSU did not have a game on Saturday, November 5.

Many, including the author, have wondered why Joe Paterno was not indicted, given that his actions seem quite similar to those of Gary Schultz and Tim Curley, who were indicted.

The Grand Jury investigation had been going on for some time, for nearly 3 years by some accounts.  Reports had surfaced that Coach Paterno and other relevant actors provided testimony to the Grand Jury as far back as January 12, 2011.

Here are some things we know about the investigation:

Sometime in 2009:  Grand Jury gets case

Fall 2010:  State AG's office takes over investigation;

Late 2010:  McQueary interviewed concerning 2002 incident;

January 2011: 8 investigators assigned to case (up from 1);

January/February 2011:  Paterno, Schultz and Curley testify before Grand Jury.

What took so long for the Indictment to come out?  Is it a coincidence that it came out during the week immediately following Coach Paterno's historic win?  Would it have come out when it did if PSU had lost on October 29?

Doing JoePa Some Favors?
Those that have surmised that the Grand Jury gave preferable treatment to Coach Paterno by not indicting him despite the fact that it appears he was as much a part of the "cover-up" as Schultz and Curley are bolstered by the timing of the Indictment.
