PSU Police Deny McQueary Made Report About 2002 Incident - But That's Not the Whole Story

Penn State Police Deny McQueary Filed Report With Them

Yesterday, the Penn State University Police denied that Mike McQueary had ever filed a report with them concerning the 2002 shower incident involving Jerry Sandusky and an unidentified boy, witnessed by McQueary.

This is an unsurprising knee jerk reaction by PSU Police, but it really doesn't tell us anything we didn't already know.  We knew from the Indictment that the Grand Jury had subpoenaed records from the PSU Police in connection with its investigation, and that no records were produced relating to this particular incident.

So, basically, reading between the lines, the police simply made a statement based upon their knowledge that no such incident report was produced (and never existed?).

PSU Police:  Tell Us Something We Don't Know

But, I am reasonably certain, the police did not yesterday speak with every one who worked for them in 1992 prior to issuing their statement.  Rather, this statement should be: "We have no police report relating the the 2002 incident."  Tell us something we don't already know!

Also, the statement by PSU Police is not directly responsive to McQueary's claim that he "spoke with" the police about the incident.  He never claimed that he filed a report.  He said he spoke with them.  This story is sure to grow, because there is a lot at stake.

What Exactly Did Mike McQueary's E-Mail Say?

Here is the full text of the McQueary e-mail, at least according to ESPN (apparently nothing is omitted, I guess McQueary likes ellipses):

... you are the first person I have told this ... and I don't know you extremely well ... and I have been told bye officials to not say anything ...I did stop it, not physically ... but made sure it was stopped when I left that locker room ... I did have discussions with police and with the official at the university in charge of police .... no one can imagine my thoughts or wants to be in my shoes for those 30-45 seconds ... trust me. Do with this what you want ... but I am getting hammered for handling this the right way ... or what I thought at the time was right ... I had to make tough impacting quick decisions. 
This is off record ... again ... I have not and will not say anything to anyone else.

If I Were You, Mike, I's Stopped Talking...

By issuing the e-mail to someone he "doesn't know extremely well," and making claims that are contradicted by the Grand Jury Indictment and now the PSU Police, Mike McQueary has placed himself in potentially very hot water.

Last evening, the NY Times issued an excellent article discussing how it was that investigators tracked down Mike McQueary in the first place.  Interestingly, the investigators knew nothing about the 2002 incident until they found an anonymous post in late 2010 that suggested that a PSU coach had witnessed a disturbing act by Sandusky in the past.  The investigators ultimately concluded that McQueary had to be the coach in question.  When they tracked him down, he spoke in depth about the incident, apparently relieved that he could unburden himself.
