Transparency: How Full Frontal Exposure of Our Personal Lives via the Internet Can Lead to Some Pretty Funny Interview Questions!

Transparency.  To me, it is often a good thing, and in my practice, I define it as:   Keeping my clients abreast of everything that is going on in their cases as they occur.

Transparency:  To me, its not a good thing in my personal life.  I define that type of transparency thusly:  Nearly everything I have ever done via the Internet can be discovered!

Joel Stein of Time Magazine did a brilliant article on this issue just today.  Click Here to read it.

So, for better or for worse, as Mr. Stein's article explains, companies are mining this information and are utilizing it to learn more about job candidates.  So, if you and your spouse sometimes use the Internet to search for porn (it happens!), explore adopting a child, or check out the latest news from Marily Manson, well, don't be surprised if the interviewer is looking at you like the cat who ate the canary.  She knows!!!!

More importantly, though, is the question of candor. Few things are more important to a job interviewer than their "BS Meter."  And, now that they know so much about you, they may in a roudabout way use the information they have gleaned to explore your capacity for truth (or deft avoidance!).

I can see it now:

"So, do you and your wife ever surf the internet for some late night excitement, say like last Wednesday at 11:52 p.m.?"

"So do you spend your free time constructively, or do you ever, say, watch Extreme Wrestling, like, oh...the June 14, 1992 match betwen the Sandman and Raven when they smashed each other over the head with metal chairs, for example?"

"What do you think of Cambodian children?"

"Are you frugal with your money, or would you, for example, consider buying your 11 year-old a cell phone from AT & T last week?"

"Are you patriotic.  I mean, you wouldn't, for example, post something on Facebook calling our President a "friggin idiot," would you?"

"You don't think the Yankees suck, do you?"

"Your not a Facebook Freind with any of our former employees, such as those two clowns we fired, Bob Smith and Rachel Jones?"

Ahh, the coming years should be fun as we all become more and more transparent!  Big Brother is everywhere!
